Solutions for reducing short-circuits on transmission network, applied in the Southeast of Vietnam

Abstract:
Along with the increase in the scale of power suppliesand loads, short-circuits tend to increase. At the moment, some 220kV busbars in the Southeast have been isolated to prevent short-circuits from exceeding the allowed threshold of 40kA [1]. In the coming years, many big power supplies will be put into operation. Thus if no effective solutions are worked out, increased short-circuits will happen on large scale, threatening the operation safety of electric equipments. This study presents an overview of short-circuits, methodologies, recommended solutions and some experiences of other countries in dealing with increased short-circuits. It also present the calculations for the transmission network of the Southeast on the basis of the network in the National Power Development Master Plan for Period 2011-2020 with outlook to 2030 (MP VII) as approved by the Prime Minister. The conclusions and recommendations of the study will contribute a scientific and practical base for power planning in order to develop an effective, safe and reliable 500-220kV transmission system in Vietnam.
